A lawyer representing a woman who accused Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson of sexual misconduct said 20 of the 24 proceedings against the player had been settled.
Women claim that Watson booked a massage therapy session and had sexual harassment. Watson denied that claim.
Female lawyer Tony Busby said Tuesday that Ashley Solis, the first woman to file a complaint against Watson, had not settled her proceedings. Solis recently appeared on HBO’s Real Sports, and she said Watson’s $ 230 million deal with the Cleveland Browns earlier this year felt like a “fault.” Buzbee said the other three women have not reached a reconciliation.
Busby praised Solis in his statement on Tuesday.
“The proceedings against Deshaun Watson began with a single call from a brave and strong woman, who was Ashley Solis. At the time of that call, she was legal to receive weekly for our company. It was just one of the hundreds of calls for help. She originally turned her back on our screening process, but my staff insisted that I talk to her personally. I’m glad she did her best. Looking back, with Watson’s former lawyer who downplayed Ashley and her profession and arrogantly minimized the actions of someone he called an “asset.” After contact, I was convinced that our law firm should try to help her. As a result of Ashley’s lonely but brave voice, many women allegedly experienced the same behavior quickly became bold to move forward. I am very proud to represent them all, “Buzbee said in his statement.
“They have endured vulgar criticism and fanatical ignorance. They faced the exhaustion of cross-examination by skilled litigants and stood firm. They are all warriors. Today we are these. Although he made an important announcement about the case, it is important to point out that without Ashley Solis, the actions these women would probably have been free to continue. The truth is her courage. Without the willingness to move forward, the NFL wouldn’t be thinking about discipline right now. There’s no research on how teams can intentionally or unknowingly enable certain actions. Sports teams screen personnel. We haven’t considered the process, and this important story wouldn’t have dominated the sports heading for over a year.
“Today we announce that all proceedings against Deshaun Watson, except four, have been resolved. We are working on paperwork related to these settlements, and those specific cases will be dismissed. The terms and amounts of the settlement are confidential. I will not comment further on the settlement or such cases.
“As I said, Ashley Solis is one of the heroes of this story. Her case has not been resolved, so her story and the story of the other three brave women will continue. Other Dockets. We look forward to trying these proceedings in due course, in line with our obligations and court schedule. “
The NFL is investigating allegations against Watson, and the 26-year-old could face a long suspension if he discovers that the league violates his personal course of action. Two Texas grand juries have refused to prosecute Watson for criminal charges filed by 10 whistleblowers.
Watson, a three-time professional bowler who turns 27 in September, missed the entire season last season due to a dispute with his team, the Houston Texans, due to heightened claims against him. He was finally traded to Browns.
